The design, synthesis and study of new organic chromophores with functional properties presents avenues to solving many problems in energy conversion technologies, while also helping to inform our understanding of fundamental inter- and intramolecular interactions. Focussing on the design of organic chromophores with well-defined 3D geometries reveals a rich and informative chemical space which we are currently exploring.

Two aspects of our work on functional chromophores in this respect will be presented.

The first concerns functional triptycene based chromophores with molar absorptivities and photoluminescent quantum yields which are greater than the sum of its parts.

The second encompasses dithienosilole based molecular donors employed in “non-conventional” bulk heterojunction nanoparticles and their application in the photocatalytic generation of hydrogen from water.

We are delighted to announce the launch of the HiFunMat PhD labeling process for first-year PhD students conducting research under the supervision of a HiFunMat member.

This initiative offers a unique opportunity for students to enrich their PhD journey through diverse interdisciplinary scientific training, develop a personalized portfolio showcasing their acquired skills, engage with industry partners, and enhance essential soft skills. Participants will also benefit from mentoring - upon request - and gain privileged access to HiFunMat events such as Summer Schools, Conferences, Workshops, and Industrial Visits. By actively participating in all mandatory events, students will qualify for a diploma supplement recognizing their enhanced training.

The application folder should be sent before December 19, 2024 to capucine.loth[at]ics-cnrs.unistra.fr. Applications will be reviewed, and decisions communicated in January 2025, as some events are scheduled to commence that month.

The result is an enhancement in hole mobility values and additional tools to design new organic semiconductors The effect of hydrogen bond interactions on the electronic nature of DPP-based organic semiconductors: implications on charge transport

In this work, we show that hydrogen bond interactions, in addition to directing supramolecular order, can have an intriguing effect on the molecular and electronic properties of DPP derivatives, facilitating redox processes in the solid state. As a result, charge carrier formation can be enhanced in devices, contributing to the improvement of electrical performances of two exceptionally small molecular semiconductors based on a thiophene-capped diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as the electroactive component and amide groups as hydrogen-bonding units. Two different topologies of the amide groups were explored, C-centered and N-centered (HDPPBA-C and HDPPBA-N, respectively), and the results were compared to the HDPPH molecule with no amide groups. Spectroelectrochemical experiments, in conjunction with vibrational spectroscopies and DFT calculations, demonstrate that hydrogen bond formation promotes modifications on the effective conjugation length of the studied semiconductors, which may facilitate the generation of free charge carriers in organic field effect transistors (OFETs). These results open a new strategy towards the simple design of organic semiconductors and control over their morphological and electrical properties by simple hydrogen bond formation.

By increasing the electroactive polymer content of PEDOT analogues, OECTs were made with state-of-the-art normalized transconductance (453 ± 70 S cm-1) and μC* (830 ± 37 F cm 1 V 1 s 1), faster dedoping kinetics, and a 99% IDS pulsing stability over 200 ON/OFF cycles. The highest performance is reached for PE2-OE4 with a balanced 50/50% mass of backbone and side chains. This paper encourages the community to calculate the electroactive polymer content when design a new pi-conjugated polymers for electrochemcial applications. The development of devices based on organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) relies on the rational design of high-performing organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs). Here, a series of solution-processable copolymers composed of unsubstituted 2,2′-bis-(3,4-ethylenedioxy)thiophene (biEDOT) and 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene (ProDOT) substituted with linear or branched oligo(ethylene oxy) (OE) side chains are reported. By varying the size of the linear and branched side chains, it is found that the highest OECT performance is achieved with a near equivalent molar mass of the side chain and electroactive conjugated polymer repeat unit. With four OE units (PE2-OE4,electroactive content of 49%), OECTs with state-of-the-art normalized transconductance (453 ± 70 S cm−1) and µC* (830 ± 37 F cm−1 V−1 s−1), rapid dedoping kinetics, and a pulsing stability of 99% IDS retention over 200 ON/OFF cycles are achieved. A consistent improvement in OECT stability with decreasing side-chain size is also observed. The origin of the enhanced stability is rationalized by correlating IDS losses to changes in channel absorbance cycle after cycle during operation. This work encourages the calculation of the electroactive polymer content of an OMIEC when designing the side chains. It also shows that the PE2 backbone with short OE side chains is a promising structure for (bio)electrochemical devices.

Last week, the André Malraux Library hosted the Village des Sciences in the frame of the "Fête de la Science," coordinated by Marie-Laure Voirand. Members of the Egal'ITI committee (M. Rabineau, J. Rodon-Fores, M. Galerne, and C. Loth) from the ITI HiFunMat participated by organizing an interactive stand on materials science. Two afternoons were dedicated to school visits, while Saturday was open to the general public, including families and children of all ages.

Both adults and children eagerly engaged in the workshops run by our committee. Participants created alginate beads, introducing them to the fascinating world of polymers. Puzzles made from images contributed by HiFunMat members, handcrafted by students, added a creative touch to the event. Additionally, a quiz about materials science highlighted their applications in fields such as health, environment, and energy. A microscope was also available, offering a closer look at materials on a microscopic scale. The activities sparked curiosity, with many parents and children asking insightful questions.

HiFunMat students and members volunteered with enthusiasm to animate the stand, ensuring a lively and educational experience for all.

Three other stands, hosted by the Zoological Museum, Octolab, and CyberGrange, offered children and parents the chance to explore various scientific fields through a fun rally.

The event was a resounding success, as in previous years, and we look forward to welcoming new enthusiastic participants next year!

I would like to thank the the international jury for its evaluation work and the Presidency for its renewed confidence.

I would also like to thank the entire team at the ITI office, the University's finance department, the DNUM, the administrative team at the Faculty of Physics and Engineering and the partner faculties (Chemistry and FST Mulhouse), the UHA and the administrative teams at the CNRS Alsace delegation and the ICS who supported us.
None of this would have been possible without the support of a number of people, both when the project was being set up and over the last 4 years, the members of the management committee, the members of the graduate school management committee, the members of the executive committee, Egal-ITI and the steering committees.

We will continue with the same energy to develop our consortium in line with the recommendations of the evaluation committee and institutional guidelines."

news-16321 Mon, 01 Jul 2024 09:00:00 +0200 École d'été sur les matériaux pour l'environnement et la société : sciences et technologies pour un avenir durable /fr/actualites/actualite/ecole-dete-sur-les-materiaux-pour-lenvironnement-et-la-societe-sciences-et-technologies-pour-un-avenir-durable Organisée sur le thème des « Matériaux pour l'environnement et la société », l’école d’été 2024 de l’ITI HiFunMat vise l’intégration des recherches sur les matériaux pour l’environnement dans un contexte global de transition environnementale, en abordant les aspects sociétaux inhérents à la transition écologique. L’objectif ? Rassembler étudiants, chercheurs et professionnels autour d'un objectif commun : concevoir un avenir plus durable grâce aux matériaux innovants. Retour sur cet évènement avec les organisateurs.  

« Nous avons souhaité concevoir cette école dans le but d’aborder non seulement les aspects techniques des matériaux, mais aussi leur positionnement dans la transition écologique. L'objectif principal était de sensibiliser les étudiants des domaines de la chimie, physique, biologie à l'importance des sciences humaines et sociales dans la transition écologique et de les encourager à prendre du recul par rapport à leurs disciplines respectives », explique Valérie Caps, elle-même chercheuse en chimie verte et coorganisatrice de cette semaine de formation.

L’école avait ainsi une double ambition: refléter la variété des apports technologiques des matériaux dans la dépollution (de l’eau, de l’air, des sols), le recyclage, la restauration écologique et ancrer ces technologies dans un contexte sociétal plus large, en abordant des sujets tels que l'acceptabilité, l’éthique, l’engagement, la coopération entre disciplines, avec les acteurs du monde socio-économique.

« Nous avons convié des intervenants en sciences humaines et sociales déjà impliqués dans des projets interdisciplinaires sur l’environnement », ajoute la chercheuse. La première journée de l'événement a notamment été marquée par une conférence de Julien Delord (INSPE), enseignant-chercheur en philosophie, qui a exploré les défis de la soutenabilité de la transition écologique. La juriste Marie-Pierre Camproux-Duffrene (SAGE), a éclairé le rôle crucial du droit dans ce processus. L’économiste Anne Rozan (ENGEES) a mis en avant les leviers comportementaux, individuels et collectifs, qui peuvent être activés pour impulser le changement.

Chaque journée se terminait par un atelier conçu pour initier des discussions interdisciplinaires et mieux comprendre les conditions et les enjeux de l’interdisciplinarité. Le premier atelier portait sur la manière d’établir des liens entre les différentes disciplines et a souligné l'importance à la fois de dépasser les frontières disciplinaires et de s'impliquer en tant que chercheur auprès des divers acteurs de la société civile. « Penser collectivement à des problèmes complexes comme la transition écologique requiert en effet de dépasser les frontières entre disciplines, mais aussi entre scientifiques, décideurs, collectivités, entreprises et citoyens[1] », détaille Valérie Caps. Le deuxième atelier a porté sur les liens entre interdisciplinarité et transition environnementale au regard de l’interconnexion des objectifs de développement durable et le dernier sur les relations entre interdisciplinarité, connaissances situées, diversité et égalité . « Le concept de connaissances situées explique que les connaissances sont produites par des acteurs imprégnés de leur propre vision, dans un contexte donné. Les sciences ne sont donc pas neutres et la diversité des acteurs, approches, disciplines est d’autant plus primordiale pour permettre d’élargir cette vision et de lui donner du sens dans un contexte global », affirme la scientifique.

Cet esprit transdisciplinaire a été maintenu tout au long de l’école. Les présentations techniques intégraient en effet des réflexions sociétales, et des interventions en duo favorisaient le dialogue entre disciplines.  « La réussite de l’évènement, analyse Mélodie Galerne, manager de l’ITI, repose sur ce dialogue entre différentes disciplines. Les intervenant.es des journées plus techniques ont tous souligné les connexions entre leurs travaux de recherche et les autres disciplines ».

Parmi les moments forts, une session sur les socio-écosystèmes et les Zones Ateliers,[2] et la présentation d’un projet de recherche participative impliquant des élèves du primaire par Bénédicte Lebeau (IS2M) et Laurence Gondet (IPHC), ont illustré la collaboration entre chercheurs et société civile.

Autre temps marquant de cette semaine riche, une conférence grand public de Jérôme Santolini, chercheur engagé, intitulée « Etre scientifique aujourd’hui » dans le contexte de crises climatique, social et politique. « Nous avons travaillé en petits groupes avec des citoyens venus pour l’occasion sur ces questions de responsabilité et d’engagement du chercheur. Cela nous a permis de prendre du recul et de réfléchir ensemble à comment interagir pour que la science puisse accompagner la société utilement dans cette transition écologique », commente Valérie Caps.

L'école d'été s'est conclue par une table ronde où les étudiants ont restitué leur réflexion, partageant leurs apprentissages et leur engagement envers l'interdisciplinarité. Les retours ont été très positifs, montrant un fort niveau d'implication des jeunes participants, comme le souligne Mathilde Lescure, PhD : « Au-delà de l’aspect scientifique des interventions, un fort accent a été mis sur notre implication en tant que jeunes chercheurs pour la cause environnementale. Un apport nécessaire pour nous raisonner sur notre impact et notre mobilisation ; après avoir assisté à cette école d’été, nous ne pouvons plus envisager et aborder notre recherche de la même façon ».

Fluorescence, photocatalysis and applications to OPV. s-Tetrazines1, and the far more enigmatic heptazines2, which count much less described examples, are among the most electron deficient high-nitrogen content, stable aromatic heterocycles (Fig. 1). This peculiarity confers them very original physico-chemical characteristics, including delayed fluorescence, a high electrochemical reduction potential, and a strong potential in organic photocatalysis. In addition, heptazines can trigger enhanced electron transport in OPV devices. However, their synthetic approach, for heptazines, is still in its infancy. We will present and comment on new strategic synthetic procedures involving these two families, insisting more on heptazines recent results, and new properties.

This lecture will therefore recall new synthetic advances in both fields of tetrazines, and heptazines. Noticeably, a new synthetic procedure of heptazines using mechanochemistry, elaborated in the PPSM laboratory, will be presented. As well, we will describe new very low-viscosity tetrazine-based fluorescent liquids.  The original delayed fluorescence of original heptazines, which are the first species to present sometimes a singlet-triplet inversion, will be detailed, along with first results in photocatalysis. Examples featuring the molecules concerned are gathered in the Scheme 1 below.

For this second edition, students attended 12 presentations of 15 minutes from 2nd and 3rd year PhD students, and 15 presentations from 1st year PhD students who briefly introduce themselves and their topic with a flash presentation. HiFunMat master students were also invited to expand their own network and witness the scientific work of PhD students. This is an event organized by HiFunMat students and for HiFunMat students. Through this approach, students acquire soft skills in conferences and events organization, which are key assets for their future careers.

Throughout his career he worked, often in close collaboration with experiment and simulation, on a broad range of topics. These topics involve polymers at interfaces, electrically charged soft matter systems, topological constraints in passive and active polymer systems, or semiflexible polymers and biofilaments. Not only through the numerous scientific contributions, but also by attracting distinguished scientists to the Institut Charles Sadron, Albert Johner played a preeminent role in maintaining and developing the “Theory and Simulation of Polymer” group at the institute. We welcome Olivier Bardagot, a new PI who will broaden our activities to the field of bioelectronics. He will work hand in hand with Nicolas Leclerc on the control of polymer ordering and electronic properties to optimize the electrochemical and chemical doping of pi-conjugated polymers for bioelectronic and thermoelectric applications. Olivier joined ICPEES as independent young researcher (Chargé de Recherche) in February 2023. His interests are in understanding the chemical and electrochemical doping mechanisms of highly structured organic semiconductors for bioelectronic and thermoelectric applications. A physicist by training, he obtained his MSc in Nanoscience and Engineering Physics at the Grenoble Institute of Technology (Phelma, France) in partnership with Imperial College London (UK). To better understand the molecular design of the materials he was studying, he completed a PhD at Université Grenoble Alpes/CEA Grenoble (France) with Dr. Renaud Demadrille from 2016 to 2019. He focused on the organic synthesis of n-type polymers and their doping for thermoelectric and photovoltaic applications. From 2020 to 2023, he developed his skills in time-resolved spectroscopy and data analysis during a post-doctoral stay in the FemtoMat group of Prof. Natalie Banerji at the University of Bern. Notably, he improved the electronic performance of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) and identified energetical and morphological factors limiting the (de)doping kinetics of the polymer channel during device operation.
